FREE Breakfast and Lunch for ALL STUDENTS! The 2023-2024 school year is off to a healthy start, and we are so excited to be included in the Community Eligibility Provision - that means all Tuckahoe students will receive a daily breakfast and lunch meal for FREE! Students are offered nutritiously complete meals daily, free of charge. However, a la carte items including bottled water and second entrees including but not limited to a second slice of pizza, mac & cheese, or sausage links are an additional fee. Students will no longer be allowed to charge these items with a zero-account balance. You can add funds to your student’s account using the TITAN link on the website or by sending in cash or check to the cafeteria or business office. Families do not need to fill out a free/reduced meal application, but it is helpful to the district if you fill out the income collection form available on the Tuckahoe School Dining Services webpage. This can be completed at any time and returned to Colleen McIntyre in the main office. Our food service staff takes great care in providing nutritious, well-balanced meals. Our team is annually trained in food safety, making accommodations for students with food allergies with the skills and knowledge to ensure a safe and healthy experience for all. We look forward to continuing serving your students, have a wonderful year! The Nassau County Supreme Court issued a decision declaring New York State Regulations requiring a “mask mandate” unconstitutional and unenforceable. Governor Hochul responded by issuing a statement disagreeing with the decision and promised to promptly serve a notice of appeal. This appeal will result in an automatic stay that will “unambiguously restore the mask rule until such time as an appellate court issues a further ruling.” At this point, we anticipate the stay of the Court’s decision will be in effect by early morning. To be consistent, our protocols, including the wearing of masks in school, will remain in effect for tomorrow to assist in limiting the spread of the COVID-19 virus. We will continue to monitor the situation and send updates as they come in. During this campaign, CISA will highlight ways students, parents, teachers and school administrators can stay safe online, avoid becoming victims of a cyberattack, and learn best practices to improve cyber hygiene. CISA has seen an increase in ransomware attacks against K-12 educational institutions. Malicious cyber actors target school computer systems, which can slow access to systems -- rendering the systems inaccessible to basic functions, including remote learning. Phishing attacks use email or malicious websites to infect machines with malware and viruses to collect personal and financial information. Cybercriminals use these attacks to entice users to click on a link or open an attachment that can then infect their computers, creating vulnerability to attacks. OurPhishing Tip Sheethas additional information on combating phishing. We encourage everyone - students, parents, teachers, administrators and chief information security officers of school districts to review our recently releasedstopransomware.gov– a new website designed to help individuals and organizations prevent attacks that can severely impact business processes and leave organizations without the data they need to operate and deliver mission-critical services. The website contains specialresources for K-12to assist institutions with their unique cybersecurity needs and has a number of resources for schools to explore and reference to learn how to stay safe online. We also encourage you to read a specialblogfrom Eric Goldstein, Executive Assistant Director for Cybersecurity, which highlights why cyber hygiene for educational institutions is so vital. Our world relies more heavily on technology for work and play and it is increasingly important that schools and academia prepare for potential threats from bad actors. Check our social media accounts,@CISAgovand@Cyber, during the campaign for more cybersecurity tips. Since Tuckahoe’s students are not using paper at this time, publishing books have been tricky, but Mrs. Neill’s 8th graders were up for the challenge. Each student wrote, illustrated, and published their own children’s book on a website called bookcreator.com. The students in both Mrs. O’Brien’s and Ms. Whittle’s first grade classes were then mesmerized to see actual authors and illustrators reading their books “live” during a Google Meet. Each book taught a “lesson” about real life situations such as getting along with others, the lifecycle of frogs, and it is ok to be different. Mrs. Neill’s 8th graders have published two books this year and they are well on their way to becoming professional writers. Good afternoon Tuckahoe. As we prepare for the break, I am thankful for a supportive school community that has worked diligently to keep us safe and prepare to assist our students and families as we navigate through the quickly changing circumstances during the COVID-19 pandemic. While we do not anticipate a school closure, as a precautionary measure we are sending all students home for the holiday break with their tablets and chargers. Should the governor order schools closed while we are away, our students and teachers are prepared to seamlessly shift to remote instruction. When your children arrive home this afternoon, we ask that you ensure the tablets and chargers are placed in a safe location and returned with the students next Monday. Thank you for your continued support as we ask that you remain vigilant over the holiday, continuing to social distance, wash hands often, and wear masks when needed. I wish you all a Healthy and Happy Holiday. ¡Buenas Tardes! The Parent Dashboard is part of New York’s Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) plan, which emphasizes equity in education for all students and expands measures of school accountability and student success. This new dashboard will provide parents with information about their child’s school. The Parent Dashboard is now available in addition to the New York State School Report Card on NYSED’s public data site. The Parent Dashboard offers information on all public schools including charter schools. In 2019, NYSED gathered feedback from parents and stakeholders to guide the work of developing the Parent Dashboard. The data elements that parents ranked highest on the survey are available on the Parent Dashboard. NYSED is now gathering additional feedback from parents and stakeholders to guide further enhancements to the Parent Dashboard. We invite parents and other stakeholders to explore the Parent Dashboard and then provide feedback via an online feedback survey available in 17 languages. NYSED will use this feedback to identify the data that is most useful to parents and the public and to make improvements to the website. If you have any questions or would like more information, please visit the Parent Dashboard, which includes frequently asked questions and contact information. We acknowledge that the decision of whether to return to the school building or enroll in full-time remote learning is a personal decision for each Tuckahoe student and family. Tuckahoe will offer the option for full-time remote learning for our K-8 students during the Fall Semester of 2020. Each student will be assigned a weekly learning schedule, which may include virtual instruction through both live and pre-recorded sessions and independent work (to be submitted through Google Classroom). In order to participate in remote learning, the Full-Time Remote Learning Registration Form must be completed for each student. That means families with multiple children should complete one form for each child who will participate in remote learning. The deadline to submit the form is 11:59PM on, Thursday, August 27, 2020. This will allow the school to create remote schedules and assign your student to a virtual class. To learn more about full-time remote learning, please consult The Tuckahoe Common School District Full Time Remote Learning Parent Guidance. Students can only return to in-person instruction at the beginning of each marking period. Remote learning students who do not proactively opt back into in-person learning by October 23 will continue with remote learning for the second marking period as well, which extends through January 29, 2021. The District will determine the need for spring semester remote learning at a later date, based on updated information from state and federal health agencies. Technology: All students who enroll in remote learning will receive a district-issued Microsoft Tablet. Meal Service: Students who participate in remote learning are still eligible for meal service from the Tuckahoe Common School District. Meals will be available for pickup at the school between the hours of 8:30 am and 10:30 am. We look forward to partnering with your family and remain committed to providing quality learning for all students this fall. https://www.tuckahoecommonsd.com/News/Story.aspx?id=121512 Fri, 21 Aug 2020 04:00:00 GMT false121512 Parent Re-Opening Forum August 19, 2020 Topic: Re-Opening Parent Forum Time: Aug 19, 2020 02:00 PM Eastern Time (US and Canada) Join Zoom Meeting https://us02web.zoom.us/j/81514203535?pwd=aW5YQTFFRHQ4dmdzY3NzYm9iejkvQT09 Meeting ID: 815 1420 3535 Passcode: 433407 One tap mobile +19292056099,,81514203535# US (New York) +13126266799,,81514203535# US (Chicago) Dial by your location +1 929 205 6099 US (New York) +1 312 626 6799 US (Chicago) +1 301 715 8592 US (Germantown) +1 669 900 6833 US (San Jose) +1 253 215 8782 US (Tacoma) +1 346 248 7799 US (Houston) Meeting ID: 815 1420 3535 Find your local number: https://us02web.zoom.us/u/kpkX5mFGr https://www.tuckahoecommonsd.com/News/Story.aspx?id=121475 Wed, 19 Aug 2020 04:00:00 GMT false121475 Board of Trustees Regular Meeting - August 17, 2020, 7:30 p.m. School Cafetorium Masks Required for entry to the building, please socially distance. For Grades 3 through 6, a 5-day window will be established each week with an “A Day” and “B Day” schedule in mind starting April 27, 2020. This will mean that subject areas are split up so there is equity in time/focus over the course of the next few weeks. The goal here is for students to have a manageable schedule, so they may organize their week in relation to the posted/sent schoolwork on each given day. Please see the chart below for the schedule. ➢ On these alternating A/B days, teachers will be evaluating work and providing feedback and support to students through email. Be sure to check your email each day. If you are having difficulty logging on or completing work, please reach out the specific teacher, Mrs. Parisi or Mrs. Sicari as soon as possible. ➢ Students with IEPs and 504 plans will continue to receive services remotely during the emergency closure to the extent possible. Special education, ENL, technology, band, physical education/health teachers, and other support staff will be checking-in with students and parents to provide remote services and assistance. Student Schedule, Grades 3, 4, 5, & 6 The following schedule repeats every two days. NOTE: This schedule will continue, with every “A Day” and “B Day” repeating in tandem for as long as the Distance Learning operation is in effect, as per Governor Cuomo’s guidance. This situation is classified as a PANDEMIC and is a PUBLIC HEALTH EMERGENCY. FACTS  Symptoms of COVID-19 do not appear in an infected body until typically 14 days after infection. However, during this time, if you do not responsibly social distance yourself and quarantine you are spreading the virus and infecting many people.  80% of infected persons will not need to be hospitalized and can recover at home in self-quarantine. 20% will need hospitalization, possibly requiring intensive medical attention. These chances are much higher in people of older age or with preexisting medical conditions, BUT PEOPLE OF ALL AGES AND HEALTH STATUS RUN A COMMON RISK OF SUFFERING CRITICAL CONDITIONS OR DEATH.  If you show symptoms of COVID-19, it is not always necessary to seek medical assistance. Staying home and self-quarantine is the recommended action. HOWEVER: IF YOU HAVE A COUGH, FEVER AND TROUBLE BREATHING, CALL YOUR DOCTOR OR GO DIRECTLY THE NEAREST EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT. SIMPLE MEASURES TO COMBAT AND SURVIVE THE CRISIS  SOCIAL DISTANCING OF 6 FEET. Is the best way to prevent the spread of the virus to other community members.  STAYING HOME ON QUARANTINE. Means not leaving one’s own house, NOT even to visit relatives or friends, and NOT accepting visitors. NOT allowing teens or children to leave the house. ONLY leaving for cases of emergency or absolute necessities, such as: To seek medical help, or to buy essential household items like food or hygiene products.  WASHING YOUR HANDS WITH SOAP AND WATER. Make sure to wash your hands frequently for TWENTY (20) seconds with soap and water, inter-crossing your fingers and washing underneath your nails. This is the most efficient practice for killing all trace of the virus, and it is also very simple. If you don’t have soap and water available hand sanitizer with 60% alcohol content can also help combat the virus.  Cover coughs and sneezes. Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze or use the inside of your elbow.  Clean AND disinfect frequently touched surfaces daily. This includes tables, doorknobs, light switches, countertops, handles, desks, phones, keyboards, toilets, faucets, and sinks.  If you are sick: You should wear a facemask or bandana when you are around other people (e.g., sharing a room or vehicle) CONCLUSION STAYING HOME ON QUARANTINE may seem overburdening, and these measures may seem extreme, but it is a sacrifice that each human must take in order to prevent the number of mass deaths that have occurred in countries like Spain and Italy, where these measures were not heeded or respected in time. Be responsible, stay educated, consider the gravity and seriousness of this crisis, and protect your family. ¡QUEDARSE EN CASA SALVA VIDAS! https://www.tuckahoecommonsd.com/News/Story.aspx?id=113903 Mon, 06 Apr 2020 04:00:00 GMT false113903 IMPORTANT MESSAGE FROM LEN SKUGGEVIK, SUPERINTENDENT K-12 Alert Message 4-3-2020 Good afternoon, this is Len Skuggevik, Superintendent of the Tuckahoe Common School District. As you are aware, the Governors executive order has extended the school closure up to and including April 14th. While our school calendar intended our students and teachers to be on “Spring Break” next week, the governor has directed all schools to continue their distant learning program instead. We want to be respectful of your family time. We know that there are needs and challenges that you may be facing and that many of you will be taking time with your family to observe religious holidays next week. With this in mind, please note that your children will continue to receive learning opportunities in a variety of formats. The activities and experiences will honor our directive for providing continuous learning, but we remind you that students should work at a pace that is comfortable for them to ensure that they have a full understanding of the materials. Given the nature of the week, teachers will be even more understanding of your time commitments. Please note, meals will still be delivered as scheduled and the school office will remain open next week as well. Thank you, have a wonderful weekend, and please continue to be safe. The third grade at The Tuckahoe Common School District did their annual collection for the Southampton Animal Shelter Foundation. Items collected were sheets, towels, dog food, cat food and animal toys. The collection went on for the entire month of March. Even though school closed half-way through March, donations were still dropped off at the teacher's homes and received via Venmo. Regardless of the current situation, this was their biggest year yet. Unfortunately due to the quarantine, the third graders were not able to join their teachers in the delivery but Mrs. Collins and Mrs. Fischette proudly delivered all the amazing donations. https://www.tuckahoecommonsd.com/News/Story.aspx?id=113642 Wed, 01 Apr 2020 07:00:00 GMT false113642 Car Parade 3-26-20 Car Parade Video Tuckahoe School Teachers miss their students SOOOOOOOOO much that they are having a Tuckahoe School Parade of cars! Hello everyone…. Today is Saturday, March 21, 2020. ` As you know at this point, our nation has asked that we social distance ourselves to help slow the spread of COVID-19. At the same time, we attempt to keep some assemblance of normalcy for ourselves and our students. Our teachers have been working incredibly hard to prepare blended learning lessons, and I’ve seen responses from parents in the forms of emails, texts, pictures, and videos. I can’t tell you how much it means to us to have you share the caring words during this time. Like us, our students are coming from many different realities. However, they all have one thing in common… they have us; their teachers and parents. Combined, we have the ability to ease their fears and confusion during this time. Our teachers have shared lessons with you and your children. Some of our children are going to run with them, some are going to walk, and others are going to have a difficult time just attempting to crawl. Let me be clear…. THAT IS OK! It is imperative that we assist them at whatever level they are at. If they want to run…. we will give them the best running shoes on the market. But if they need to crawl, we will get down on the ground with them, support them, and give them the encouragement they need to move forward. Together, we can do this. We will continue to encourage your students to do their best with their lessons. We will encourage your children to send their teachers questions so that they gain a full understanding of the materials being presented. We will continue to be available to you, their parents, to prepare you to assist them with their assignments. We also encourage you to send questions, so that you can assist them on their journey. But we must all understand that our children will move forward at many different paces. Especially during this period. As we continue this new voyage together, to not add fear, anxiety, and confusion, as their teachers, we allow our students the ability to move forward at a pace that is comfortable for each individual. Our teachers will continue to create amazing lessons. They will continue to encourage our students by reaching out and answering their questions. They will continue to communicate with your children and you to assist them in moving forward with the curriculum. What we will not do, is add any more fear and anxiety by pressuring students to complete lessons without fully understanding them. It is in our power to make them feel comfortable in their learning process, through inquiry, knowledge acquisition, and understanding. So with this in mind, I have a simple promise…. While we’re away from our students, we are puting our typical assessment of assignments on hold. We will not be assigning a number or letter grade to assignments. Instead, our teachers will be sharing “narrative feedback”. We will share with our students what they’re doing well or help them understand how something can be improved. The governor has closed our schools until March 30. However, we don’t know for certain how long this way of life may continue. Until our social distancing ends, I will try and keep you as updated as possible, through videos such as this, and through emails, our website, and social media. May you, your families, and your friends remain safe and healthy. After reading Do Something, Annie Hattrick came up with a plan to do just that. Her plan was to go to the beach and clean up garbage that people left behind during a day at the beach or garbage that had washed up. She went to the Shinnecock County Park where people camp and or have a pleasant day at the beach. The cleanup was with the Surf Rider Foundation. She even brought some family members along. When Annie went to the cleanup, she wasn’t sure what to expect so she wore gloves, and the foundation provided a bucket to collect the refuse. After the cleanup she filled out a sheet explaining all of the items she came across on the beach which included bottle tops to old socks and gloves. After a few hours they all met in the parking lot and poured all the garbage out into another bucket to start sorting. As Annie’s family were going through the bucket, they were writing down on the sheet of paper what materials and objects they accumulated. In the end Annie’s family picked up total of 8 pounds of waste. https://www.tuckahoecommonsd.com/News/Story.aspx?id=92301 Fri, 27 Sep 2019 04:00:00 GMT false92301 No School 9/30 https://www.tuckahoecommonsd.com/News/Story.aspx?id=90865 Mon, 16 Sep 2019 05:00:00 GMT false90865 Kidsday Article https://www.newsday.com/lifestyle/family/kidsday/patricia-polacco-author-children-s-books-kidsday-1.35653137 https://www.tuckahoecommonsd.com/News/Story.aspx?id=90862 Mon, 16 Sep 2019 04:00:00 GMT false90862 Outdoor Education Trip 8th Grade October 2-4, 2019 https://www.tuckahoecommonsd.com/News/Story.aspx?id=90864 Mon, 16 Sep 2019 04:00:00 GMT false90864 Hispanic Heritage Month Each year, Americans observe National Hispanic Heritage Month from September 15 to October 15, by celebrating the histories, cultures and contributions of American citizens whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and South America. The observation started in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage Week under President Lyndon Johnson and was expanded by President Ronald Reagan in 1988 to cover a 30-day period starting on September 15 and ending on October 15. It was enacted into law on August 17, 1988, on the approval of Public Law 100-402. The day of September 15 is significant because it is the anniversary of independence for Latin American countries Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. In addition, Mexico and Chile celebrate their independence days on September 16 and September18, respectively. Tuckahoe is proud to participate in this month-long celebration of Hispanic heritage and the Hispanic contribution to the United States of America. https://www.tuckahoecommonsd.com/News/Story.aspx?id=90834 Fri, 13 Sep 2019 04:00:00 GMT false90834 7th Grade Outdoor Ed Trip September 24-27, 2019 https://www.tuckahoecommonsd.com/News/Story.aspx?id=90653 Fri, 06 Sep 2019 04:00:00 GMT false90653 Middle School Meet The Teacher Night https://www.tuckahoecommonsd.com/News/Story.aspx?id=90652 Fri, 06 Sep 2019 04:00:00 GMT false90652 Elementary Meet The Teacher Night https://www.tuckahoecommonsd.com/News/Story.aspx?id=90651 Fri, 06 Sep 2019 04:00:00 GMT false90651 Welcome to the 2019-2020 school year! https://www.tuckahoecommonsd.com/News/Story.aspx?id=90487 Thu, 29 Aug 2019 05:00:00 GMT false90487 Tablet Agreements for students in Grades 5-8 https://www.tuckahoecommonsd.com/News/Story.aspx?id=90490 Thu, 29 Aug 2019 04:00:00 GMT false90490 New Teachers- WELCOME TO TUCKAHOE SCHOOL! The main idea behind this event is to make clay bowls, serve a simple soup and salad, and let participants take the bowl home as a reminder that many people face an “empty bowl” all too frequently or have too little to eat. Come to Tuckahoe on the evening of March 14th and receive a beautiful, student hand-made ceramic bowl and a meal of soup and salad for just $5.00. Please bring a canned or boxed food for donation and receive a student hand-made ceramic spoon; our thanks for helping with our cause. Event proceeds will replenish Tuckahoe School’s community garden and local food pantry. Thank you to our supporters: Hampton Bays Panera Bread, Tuckahoe Educational Committee, Tuckahoe Shared Decision Making Committee, and Tuckahoe teachers and staff.
