Writing and reading for students during a pandemic can be challenging. Since Tuckahoe’s students are not using paper at this time, publishing books have been tricky, but Mrs. Neill’s 8th graders were up for the challenge. Each student wrote, illustrated, and published their own children’s book on a website called bookcreator.com. The students in both Mrs. O’Brien’s and Ms. Whittle’s first grade classes were then mesmerized to see actual authors and illustrators reading their books “live” during a Google Meet. Each book taught a “lesson” about real life situations such as getting along with others, the lifecycle of frogs, and it is ok to be different. Mrs. Neill’s 8th graders have published two books this year and they are well on their way to becoming professional writers.
