Initial letter to the community 8/31/26

Dear Residents of the Southampton Union Free School District and Tuckahoe Common School District,
The Board of Education of the Southampton Union Free School District and the Board of Trustees of the Tuckahoe Common School District have jointly engaged Meyer Merger Studies & Consulting (MMS) to conduct an independent feasibility study to examine the potential benefits, challenges, and implications of a possible merger between our two school districts.
This study is an opportunity to gather factual information, evaluate options, and provide both Boards of Education and our communities with a comprehensive understanding of what a merger could mean for students, staff, taxpayers, and the future of public education in our region. It is important to emphasize that the study itself is not a decision to merge. Rather, it is a process designed to provide objective information that can help guide future discussions and decision-making.
A key component of this process will be the formation of a 30-member Community Advisory Committee. The committee will consist of representatives selected by the two school districts to reflect a broad cross-section of our communities. Throughout the study, committee members will review information, discuss findings, ask questions, and provide valuable local perspectives as the study progresses.
The committee's work will help shape the final study, but it will not make any decisions regarding whether the districts should merge. Its role is advisory, ensuring that community perspectives are considered throughout the process.
After the committee has completed its work, the districts will host a series of public community forums to share the findings of the study and gather additional feedback from residents. We anticipate that the first of these public forums will take place in the spring of 2027. These forums will provide opportunities for community members to learn more about the study, ask questions, and share their thoughts before either Board of Education considers any future action.
Throughout the process, both districts are committed to maintaining open communication and providing regular updates as milestones are reached. Information regarding committee activities, meeting schedules, and future public forums will be shared through each district's website and other communication channels.
We appreciate your interest and engagement as we undertake this important work together. We encourage all members of our communities to stay informed and participate in the public discussion as the study progresses.
